"Chromatic"

20 September - 18 February 2024 Be'er Sheva

invitation. Solo exhibition. Chromatic

The Negev Museum of Art is pleased to present the first museum solo show of Nirit Takele (b. 1985), one of the prominent artists in contemporary Israeli painting. Since her graduation from Shenkar Department of Multidisciplinary Art about a decade ago, Takele has made a name for herself as a painter with a distinctive personal voice, cohesive painting language, sensitive perspective, powerful expression, and a profound artistic cultural-social vision. “Power” and “vision” may seem like big words, one might even say too big, if they were not already expressed in the painter’s name, since Nirit Takele’s given name is Tegaye – whose literal meaning is, among others, power and vision.

Takele’s paintings speak simultaneously in the singular and the plural. Emanating from the personal, they expand and flow towards the social and cultural spheres, informed by her identity as a member of the Beta Israel community. Takele imbues the figures and groups she paints with a monumental presence characterized by sculptural properties like voluminosity and solidity. At the same time, she is also a colorist, and her painting is an eruption of bolds colors as well as an arena for discerning shades and hues. Takele celebrates her subjects, their appearance, and the cultural, at times even traditional, dimension they convey, among other things, through their monumentality and chromatic vibrance.

The exhibition and book Nirit Takele: Chromatic unfold a comprehensive survey of the painter’s work, including her distinctive artistic language, her thematic range, the perspectives she voices, and her involvement in the formulation of a new path in Israeli art.
